The Awards for Environmental Excellence began in 1992 aiming to encourage improvements in environmental management in line with world leading practice. Entries are reviewed and assessed by two groups, an assessment panel and a selection committee. The assessment panel's role is to determine the eligibility and undertake inspections to validate and verify the overall environmental performance of the project. The panel consists of representatives from the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP), Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), Department of Agriculture and Food, Department of Water and the Office of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). The selection committee's role is to assess the entrant's submission for demonstrated environmental excellence. The committee consists of the Director General of the Department of Mines and Petroleum and other independent members.
